Waine Cecil Johnson

Waine Cecil Johnson, MD, aged 94, eminent dermatologist and dermatopathologist, passed away on November 1, 2022.

Dr. Johnson was born on September 30, 1928, in Mt. Vernon Texas, to the late Tully and Lizzie (Yarborough) Johnson, and he was the youngest of five brothers.

Dr. Johnson received his undergraduate degree from East Texas State Teachers College and his MD from the University of Texas - Galveston.

Upon graduation, Dr. Johnson served as a physician in the U.S. Army from 1953 till1962. He served at Walter Reed Army Hospital; in Okinawa; at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C.; and at Ft. Polk, Louisiana.

Following his honorable discharge, Dr. Johnson discovered his true passion, sharing his vast knowledge of dermatopathology and inestimable surgical skills with a countless number of grateful residents and fellows.

Dr. Johnson served as clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania for 39 years, in addition to serving as professor of dermatology and pathology at Temple University, and clinical professor of dermatology at MCP-Hahnemann University. He was Chairman of the dept. of Dermatology at The Graduate Hospital from 1978 until 1998.

Dr. Johnson was also a renowned surgeon of dermatology and was one of the earliest dermatologists to develop expertise in advanced cutaneous surgical and reconstructive techniques. He pioneered the use of punch graft transplants for pitted acne scars.

Dr. Johnson served as chairman of the AAD's Committee on Pathology, and he also served as president of the American Society for Dermatopathology, the American Registry for Pathology, and the Atlantic Dermatology Association. Dr. Johnson was co-editor of the textbook "Dermal Pathology," published 85 papers, and provided chapters to 23 books over the course of his career. He was also the founder and Director Of Johnson Dermatology Associates and later President & CEO of Johnson & Griffin Dermatopathology Associates In 2020, Dr. Johnson was awarded the prestigious Master of Dermatology award in light of his significant contributions to the field.

Dr. Johnson retired from teaching dermatology at the age of 88. In his free time, Dr. Johnson enjoyed traveling, was a patron and frequent attendee of the Metropolitan Opera, loved to read, and researched the stock market religiously. Dr. Johnson had three daughters with his then-wife Ruth Jimison: Susan, Carol, and Sandra.

Dr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 50 years, Deanna; two daughters, Susan wife of George Conover and Sandra; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Jessica; two great-granddaughters, Emma and Harper; and innumerable nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by daughter Carol Tobin wife of William Tobin and grandson Jeffrey Conover.

A celebration of life for Dr. Johnson will be held on November 19, 2022, 12:00 p.m. (noon) at Warker-Troutman Funeral Home Inc, Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Friends and family may gather from 11 a.m. till noon at the funeral home prior to service.
