Richard John Drexler, 83, of Pottstown, was called by the Lord and passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 27th, 2021 at his residence surrounded by family. He was the devoted husband of his beloved "beautiful" wife Jennie Ann (Silvano) Drexler. The couple married on November 12th, 1966 in St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Pottstown. They are devoted members of the St. Aloysius Parish and were previous members for a short time at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother in Stowe.
Born on February 13th, 1938 in Kenhorst Boro, Richard was a son of the late Richard Adam and Estella Cecelia (O'Brien) Drexler. He was raised and resided in Reading until his marriage. He was an All-American High School Athlete in track and field, wrestling and football at Reading High School. He received numerous awards and trophies which included All State in wrestling and football. He was awarded a 5-year football scholarship to North Carolina State where he was part of "The Wolfpack" and played End.
He was a decorated Marine and served 6 years (1960-1966) where he also played football for the Marines. While enlisted during the Vietnam War, he did a two year tour in Okinawa, Japan. He was awarded the Rifle Marksmanship Badge and the Good Conduct Medal. Additionally, he was selected as "outstanding member" of his platoon and promoted to private first class. After serving our country; he was employed with Goss Steel, the former Rockwell International and Textile Machine Works in the machine shop. He was employed there for over 40 years before retirement in 2001. Additionally, he was a member of the Steel Workers Union.
Richard, known as "Red", enjoyed spending time with his retiree friends when they met up once a month for breakfast. He was very proud of his Irish background and relished his Irish roots. He was an animal lover and sorely missed his furry friends, the late Tanya, Sebastian and Bitty.
In addition to his loving wife, Jennie; Richard is survived by two daughters, Bernadette A. (Drexler) Fisher and her husband, John R. of Phoenixville and Teresa R. (Drexler) Saul and her husband, Christopher L. of Pottstown; six grandchildren, Alissa Zazo Johansen, wife of the late Darin Johansen, Richard A. Zazo, II and his wife, Jamie, Matthew E. Gawel, Kyle E. Gawel, Blayze R. Fisher and Blake R. Fisher; four great grandchildren, Kalliopi, Tristen, Tegan and Taylor and several nieces and nephews.
Richard is predeceased by his brother, Leo R. Drexler and his sister, Esther C. (Drexler) Polischeck.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, May 3, 2021 in his home church, St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 223 Beech St., Pottstown, PA 19464 with Father Francesco D'Amico as celebrant. Interment will be private, where military honors will be accorded.
Richard unconditionally loved his wife, his daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed. His family was the "Center of His World".
