Marjorie A. Smith, former vocal music and humanities teacher at Owen J. Roberts High School in Chester County, passed away at the age of 92 after a brief illness.
Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Ann (Sobresky) and John Koval of Pottstown. She discovered her love of music through her teacher, Margaret (Peg) Lamb, and studied at West Chester State Teacher's College. She first taught in Coatesville and then joined the Owen J. Roberts School District after her children began attending school. Mrs. Smith, or "MA", as she was affectionately called by many of her students, produced and co-directed (with colleague Roger Breidinger) the first musicals at OJR, helping many young singers to hone their talents. Several went on to have professional careers. Mrs. Smith also created several vocal ensembles including Varsity Singers, Junior Varsity Singers, Seven-Ups, Boys' Quartet, and Madri-Gals. These groups performed throughout the community and several continue at Owen J. Roberts schools with today's students.
In 2011, her former students organized a surprise party with music in honor of her 80th birthday. This led to further "reunions", the last one being held in 2019 in the OJR high school auditorium for an enthusiastic audience of family and friends.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Joseph F. Smith and her son Stephen Smith. She is survived by her three daughters, Jamie Cosumano, Pottstown, Kristina Cosumano, Germany, and Beth Smith, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and her grandchildren Kelsey McNeill of Richmond, Virginia, and Stephanie, Matt and Stephen Smith Jr. of Pottstown.
There will be no funeral services, but a final musical gathering to celebrate the life of MA Smith will be planned for next year. In lieu of flowers, her family kindly requests that donations be made in her memory to the OJR Education Foundation (https://ojref.org/donate/).
Warker~Troutman Funeral Home inc is honored to serve the Smith family.
