Fern V. Stropko

Fern V. Stropko, 85 of Pottstown, PA, passed away peacefully in her home on Thursday, December 6, 2012. Born in Oley, PA, she was the daughter of the late Elwood and Alice (Rhoads) Long. Fern was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, George. She is the beloved mother of two daughters and one son: Jackie Hamlin, Upper Pottsgrove; Gary, husband of Sandy (Laney), North Carolina; Carol, wife of Gregory Dengler, Pottstown; and three grandchildren: Kyla Dengler, Cole Laney, Breanna Stropko. Also surviving is her brother, J. Elwood Long, husband of Maryann, South Carolina. Fern was employed at the Pottstown Memorial Medical Center for 26 years as a nurse's aide and an anesthesia technician during her later years at PMMC. Patient care was very rewarding to Fern. Always caring and compassionate, she comforted patients physically and spiritually in there time of need. Previous employers included private nursing assistance, Britt's Department Store, Philco Tube, and Carpenter Steel. Devoutly faithful to our heavenly Father, Fern was a member of St. John's Byzantine Catholic Church and a former member of Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oley. Fern's greatest love was her children and grandchildren and time spent with them was very precious to her. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh with her family and friends. She was a wonderful baker and cook of both Pennsylvania Dutch and Slovak foods. She delighted in family and friends enjoying the foods she lovingly prepared, especially during the holidays. Fern was an avid seamstress and made many clothes including her daughter's wedding gown and bridemaid's gowns. She also spent many hours creating beautiful hand-embroidered baby blankets and considered this a true joy as she deeply loved children. She also enjoyed pets, angels, gardening, and was a loyal fan of Days of Our Lives watching since the first day of airing in 1965. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be truly missed and cherished. A special thanks to the staff of Tri-County Home Health and Hospice for the care and comfort. A memorial service to celebrate Fern's life will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Keystone Villa Community Room, 1180 Ben Franklin Highway East in Douglassville, PA.
