Donald Hegedus

Don Hegedus, 74, passed away Tuesday, November 9, 2021 after a long battle with Dementia. Born March 15, 1947 to Michael and Ilona Hegedus, he was one of 11 brothers and sisters. Siblings who have predeceased Don are: George, Joe, John, Monica (Rapchinski), Robert, Jimmy, Mike, and Mary. Survivors are: Rita Ferraro, Ann Worrall, and Ron Hegedus.

Don was a 1965 graduate of St. Pius X High School in Pottstown, and was in the first graduating class of Allentown College (now DeSales University) in 1969, where he majored in mathematics. He spent his 30-year teaching career at Archbishop Wood High School for Boys in Warminster, PA. Students at Wood often called him "Dr. Don". He educated thousands of students over his career, and was a staple in the Wood teaching community.

For those who knew Don well, he was a man who filled his life with his family and many hobbies. As a child of Slovak immigrants, his family was the core of his life. He loved being around his siblings, especially his twin brother, Ron. Every family picnic, celebration, or weekly Sunday gathering, you could find Don engaging in conversation, laughing and egging others on in verbal debates. Though never married, Don was incredibly attentive to all his nieces and nephews, and treated them as if they were his own children. You could always count on "Uncle Don" to be there for any sport or school activity.

Don was incredibly passionate about tennis. He first learned to play in his 30's, and picked up the sport quickly. He shared his love of tennis with his family, coaching three of his nieces (Maria Rapchinski, Maureen Hegedus Hilleary, and Kathleen Hegedus Fink), who all went on to have collegiate tennis careers. Another one of Don's hobbies was photography. He was never without his camera, and was always capturing a moment in time.

He also loved going to the racetrack with his brothers, going to the Holy Trinity Club in Pottstown, watching Notre Dame football games, building and tinkering with computers, and buying lottery tickets, attempting to hit it big. Most importantly, Don was inseparable from his twin brother, Ron. They were never apart and supported each other throughout their lives.

While Don's life ended too soon, the imprint that he left on his family and those who knew him will forever be felt. He was a man who gave to others -- and we are all better for knowing Don.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 16 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 366 South Street, Pottstown, PA with a visitation starting at 10am, followed by mass at 11am.
