Charles D. Sassaman, 94, husband of E. Jane (Kleckner) Sassaman of Manor Care, Pottstown, PA passed away on Saturday February 20, 2016 at the home. Charles and Jane had been married for the past 69 years. Born in Kamiah, Idaho he was the son of the late William and Mary (Becker) Sassaman. Charles was a tire builder for Firestone Tire & Rubber Company and then Occidental Chemical Co. both formerly of Pottstown, PA for 34 years retiring in 1984. Charles was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He served in a mortar Launcher crew first in Africa, Sicily and then in the invasion of France on Omaha Beach. He served during the battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart and two unit and two individual citations for bravery during this battle. During the invasion of France on D-Day he was part of the Big Red One. Surviving with his wife are seven children ; Linda wife of Dana Homo of Indiana, William Sassaman husband of Michelle of Illinois, John Sassaman husband of Karen of Minnesota, Candace wife of Brian Phipps of New Jersey, Richard Sassaman of Boyertown, PA, Margo Sassaman wife of Edward Antonio of Wernersville, PA and Philip Sassaman of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by seven Grandchildren and two Great-Grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be celebrated on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at I P.M. from Warker-Troutman Funeral Home, 726 East High Street, Pottstown, PA.
