Cecile Lillian (Ross) Stevenson, a beloved educator, devoted family matriarch, and cherished friend, was born on June 4, 1929, in Winnsboro, South Carolina, to the late William A. Ross, Sr. and Beatrice (Tucker) Ross. As the youngest of five siblings, Cecile grew up in a nurturing environment rich with faith and community values. After graduating from Fairfield High School, she pursued her passion for education at Johnson C. Smith University, where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education in 1951.
In high school, she met the love of her life, Lemmon Stevenson, Sr., and their enduring friendship blossomed into a beautiful marriage on August 2, 1952. Together, they created a loving home for their five children, providing a foundation of strength, guidance, and unwavering support.
Cecile's dedication to education was evident throughout her life. After many years of teaching in South Carolina, the family relocated to Pottstown, Pennsylvania, in 1972. In her new community, she made history as the first African American teacher at Colebrookdale Elementary School in the Boyertown School District. Her impact on students and colleagues alike left an indelible mark, earning her deep respect and affection. She served as an inspiration until her retirement in 1993.
A devoted woman of faith, Cecile was an integral member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Winnsboro. Her spiritual life was central to her being, and she drew strength from her relationship with God. Affectionately known as Mom, Mom-Mom, Great Mom-Mom, "Ms. Havershine," and "Ms. Cec," she was the heart and soul of her family, creating a home that felt like a sanctuary. Large holiday gatherings overflowed with love and hospitality, where every cherished guest was treated as family.
Cecile's legacy of grace, resilience, and educational excellence will continue to inspire generations to come. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Joseph Stevenson (Marva), Anita Gathers (Jerome), Donna Stevenson, and Loretta Bullock. She leaves behind a treasure trove of memories with her grandchildren: Aisha Reikow (Michael), Lemmon Damien Stevenson, Quinn Hurt Stevenson, Jerry Gathers (Keira), Tiffany McClure (Michael), Bryan Gathers, Evelyn Ray (Frank), Benjamin Bullock (Denia), and Knowle Bullock. In addition, she is survived by her thirteen beloved great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will deeply miss her presence.
