Calvin F. Benfield

Calvin F. "Cal" Benfield, 83, husband of Eleanor (Purcell) Benfield of East Race Street, Stowe, PA and formerly of Pottstown passed away on Monday December 12, 2011 at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center. Cal and Eleanor had been married for fifty-six years. Born in Centralia, PA , he was the son of the late William and Minnie (Wills) Benfield. Cal had been a maintenance worker for many years and had also worked as a part-time bartender at various establishments in the surrounding area. He was a member of St. Aloysius R.C.C. Beech & Hanover streets in Pottstown, PA where he had volunteered as a greeter at Mass. He was also a former cub scout leader of troop # 649 of St. Aloysius. Cal was very active in the community having been a third degree member of Father Bally Council # 1192, Knights of Columbus of Stowe, PA where he had served as grand knight its highest honor. He was a fourth degree member of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen # 3046 Knights of Columbus of Stowe, PA and had served as the fourth degree civic club president , once again its highest honor. He was a member of the Men of Malvern for fifty-one years. He had served on the Brothers of the Brush committee for the Pottstown Sesquicentennial. He was a long time shuffleboard team member for the Pottstown shuffleboard league. Cal enjoyed watching sports and was die hard Yankees fan if they were not playing the Phillies. He also followed all the local Philadelphia sports teams. Surviving are five children Donna Marie wife of John Schiel, Sr. of Birdsboro, PA, Thomas Benfield husband of Gena of Pottstown, PA, Robert Benfield husband of Janet of Douglassville, PA, Cal Benfield husband of Krista of Pottstown, PA and Mark Benfield husband of Janis of North Wildwood, NJ. He is also survived by nine grandchildren Caitlin wife of Richard Baldasanno, John Schiel, Jr., Tara Benfield, Abby Benfield, Andrew Schiel U.S.M.C., Michael Schiel, Brigid Benfield, Conor Benfield and Peyton Benfield and a great-grandson Ayden Schiel. Cal is also survived by a brother Howard Benfield husband of Annie of Centralia, PA . A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Aloysius R.C.C. on Friday December 16, 2011 at 11 A.M. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. A viewing will be Friday from 9 – 11 A.M. at the Gathering Center of St. Aloysius R.C.C.
