Betty J. Gibson

Betty Jane Gibson, 96, passed away peacefully, on January 29, 2021 at Manor Care Nursing Home in Pottstown, PA.

Betty was born in Reading, PA to Henry and Eva Gibson, and was preceded in death by her siblings, Bea, Dolly, Marian, Lloyd, Harold, Howard, Walter and Jack.

She attended Reading High School, where she participated in all of the girls' sports available at that time: track, hockey and basketball. After graduation, she worked at Jacobs Aircraft in Pottstown, helping to make engines for training aircraft, which supported the war effort for WWII. Then, she went on to work at Reading Hospital as a clerk in the X-Ray department for 56 years… a job she loved.

In her youth, she loved going to the 5-cent movies, especially because she could stay to watch more than one. Over the years, she was particularly attached to her dog and bird. Fiercely independent, when asked why she never married, she'd reply, "What for? I don't need no man to take care of me. What'd I need a man for?" She always had a wry sense of humor.

Spunky and free-spirited, she loved going to the casino with her brother, Walter's wife, Marion Gibson. When she could no longer go to Atlantic City, she enjoyed playing Scrabble with her niece, Charlene, and doing her puzzles.

Betty leaves behind her niece, Charlene Johnson, along with a host of nieces and nephews in the Pottstown area.

She will be sorely missed.
