Dr. Barbara A. Kraynyak-Luise, 63, of Golden Living Center-Rosemont and formerly of BoundBrook, NJ passed away on Monday, July 1, 2013 at Golden Living Center. Born in Philadelphia, PA, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Helen E. (Hudicka) Kraynyak. Barbara graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, received her BSN and MSN degrees from The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and her EdD degree from Rutgers University. A registered nurse for 42 years, Dr. Kraynyak-Luise held registered nurse licenses in NY,NJ and PA. She worked in hospital, community health, and educational settings in each state. She held teaching positions at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Rutgers University, and The College of Staten Island, City University of New York. She taught at CSI from 1987 until 2010 when she left because of illness. At CSI she was an associate Professor of Nursing teaching in the Associate and Baccalaureate Degree programs. She served on numerous college-wide and departmental committees during her tenure at the college. An expert in the care of homeless and vulnerable populations she authored/coauthored numerous publications in professional journals such as Image: The Journal of Nursing Scholarship, Journal of School Nursing, Journal of the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association, and two editions of M. Lunney's book, Critical Thinking and Nursing Diagnosis: Case Studies and Analysis. She presented papers on homelessness at professional conferences at Boston College, Bethlehem, PA, Washington, DC, Columbia University, at CSI, and for many professional groups in Staten Island and New Jersey. Barbara received many professional honors including both the XI and Mu Upsilon Chapters of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing awards, Jane Delano Distinguished Service Award, District 13, New York State Nurses Association, Nurse Recognition Award from the New Jersey League for Nursing, Mary Mastandrea Award for Humanism and Caring, Mu Upsilon Chapter, CSI, Home Town heroes Award, United Way of Central NJ and several other local honors for her work with the homeless. She was dedicated to serving others, particularly homeless children. Her doctoral dissertation was entitled – An Ethnology of Homeless Children: Life in a Shelter. Barbara dedicated years of service to the Ozanom Shelter in Edison, NJ where she had done her dissertation research. Besides weekly visits that included providing monthly birthday parties for the children, she enlisted colleagues and students to provide their professional expertise to the shelter. She also instituted the "Hug My Teddy" program that made sure each child had their own teddy bear. She also developed a wellness education program for the mothers and children on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, and self-esteem. Dr. Luise was an active member of several professional groups. She was founding vice president of the Honor Society at the College of Staten Island, served on professional advisory boards for community health and visiting nurse associations in NJ and NY, and had other leadership and consultant roles in professional organizations. Barbara was well-loved by students, colleagues and patients alike. She was known for always making herself available to listen, counsel, and provide help as needed. She will be missed for her professional contributions but even more so for her genuine love of others and caring heart. Surviving is a brother Michael J. Kraynyak husband of Helen of St. Peter's , PA. Also, two nephews Dr. Michael J. Kraynyak of Eugene, Oregon and Matthew B. Kraynyak husband of Kimberly of Blue Bell, PA and a great-niece Lucia Kraynyak. Also, two aunts Margaret LiSicky wife of Joseph of West Chester, PA and Margaret Hudicka of Media, PA and two uncles Dr. Thomas G. Crane of Clearwater, FL and Daniel M. Crane of Brockton , MA and numerous cousins. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated in St. John The Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 301 Cherry Street, Pottstown, PA on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 10 A.M. A viewing will precede the liturgy from 8:30-10 A.M. at the church. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Broomal, PA .
