Ann C McCarthy

Ann Claire (Samarco) McCarthy of North Coventry, wife of Aloysius McCarthy, Jr., finished her earthly journey peacefully at home on November 13, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.

Ann was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 1, 1942, the daughter of the late James and Claire (Hartzman) Samarco. She grew up in Belmont Hills PA, graduated from Lower Merion High School in 1959, and began working at Jersey Standard Oil in Bala Cynwyd. It was while working at Standard Oil that a young man named Al, who was delivering printed materials, asked her for a date. After several requests on his part, she finally accepted.

Ann and Al were married later that year on November 25, 1961 and joyfully celebrated 64 years of marriage. She was instrumental in the success of their commercial printing company, Valley Press, Inc. and also enjoyed working in retail at Strawbridge & Clothier, Boscov’s, and BonTon.

Always ready to help, Ann was very involved with her parish community at St. Denis in Havertown and then at St. Thomas More in South Coventry. Ann used her creativity and endless energy in parish events like the Fun Fair, Italian night, Peach Festival, and coaching cheerleading for St. Denis. At St. Thomas More she continued giving of her time and talents with the Christmas Bazaar, preparing altar cloths, making rosaries, and filling countless other needs.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Neocatechumenal Way. She had a special devotion to St. Padre Pio and volunteered many hours at the National Centre for Padre Pio. Ann visited the sick often, friends as well as strangers, to pray with them asking God to heal them through the intercession of Padre Pio.

Ann’s greatest love was that of her family and her role as wife, mother and grandmother (YaYa). She was always available for her grandchildren, immediately changing her schedule no matter what she had planned. She had an ability to make her family and friends feel special and loved on any and every occasion. Ann loved gatherings at their home and everyone was always welcomed - the more the merrier! Somehow Ann would be able to prepare delicious meals at a moment’s notice for however many people dropped in.

Holidays and celebrations were always special with plenty of food and elaborate decorations. Ann valued family traditions, and also created beautiful new ones for her family to continue. One of Ann’s most loved traditions was gifting bayberry candles to family and friends during the Christmas season. The light and scent of the bayberry candle welcomed each New Year with the glow of hope and promise.

Puzzles, cards, and games were favorite pastimes of Ann’s. There were many nights playing Scrabble into the wee hours, teaching the grandchildren card games, and spreading jigsaw puzzles on the dining room table. With her infectious laughter and lively spirit, she knew how to make game night fun!

Spending her summers in Brigantine, Ann loved time with family and friends, walking the beach and welcoming visitors. There was always space for guests to stay even if there were not enough beds. The highlight of every summer for Ann was attending the blessing of the sea on the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. She joyfully collected the blessed water to share with her loved ones.

Ann will be missed more than words can express, especially by her husband Al, and by her children: Aloysius McCarthy III (Margaret), Annmarie Barlow (Robert), Patricia Ringenwald (Richard), Thomas McCarthy, Sr., and by her sister Martha Samarco. Memories of YaYa will be cherished by her ten grandchildren: Brandon McCarthy, Luis McCarthy, Joseph McCarthy, Meghan Barlow, Daniel Barlow, Matthew Ringenwald, Bridget Ringenwald, Thomas McCarthy, Jr., Colin McCarthy, and Claire McCarthy.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 from 9:30 a.m. till 10:45 a.m. at St. Thomas More Church, 2101 Pottstown Pike, Pottstown. PA 19465. A eulogy will be read prior to Mass. Mass of Christian Burial will be begin promptly at 11 a.m. in the Church.
